I’m more passionate today than when I founded the organization and truthfully I’m a bit crazy for books. I simply love researching and uncovering stories. Everyone has a story inside of them. I literally leap at the opportunity for Wildflower to donate books, especially to organizations that know how great the benefit will be for the women and children they serve. I’ve heard about mothers utilizing our reading space as a form of escape and mental wellness as they may be the sole provider for their children, on the front lines, and trying to find employment and self-sufficiency. They may connect with other women, discussing a romance novel or maybe exchanging legal resources. The reality is the libraries and reading spaces give them somewhere to go when they have to stay where they are. Same for the children who run to the reading areas after school to relax, and wind down before starting their homework. I think about and imagine the myriad of ways they lounge while thumbing through different stories and feeling excited, comforted, and elevated.
Reading takes us away from home, but more important, it finds homes for us everywhere. -Hazel Rochman
Serving in a non-profit is humbling for all the ways that one might imagine a professional juggler balancing a lot of balls might feel in front of an audience. All eyes on you!
Despite the consistent juggling, the reward of philanthropic work to the soul is immeasurable. It is the connection to something greater that makes the early mornings, long nights, and weekends gratifying. It is the feeling that somewhere in the thousands of books we’ve delivered, there’s a story that will bring comfort to someone, a story that will elevate another to rise and write a new narrative of their journey. We’ve received thanks from staff and recipients who alike enjoy the beauty of the reading installations and the hope it brings for a new beginning.
