Our First Reading Space in a Wellness Center for Teens

As a teenager, growing up in very different times, I found solace in books. They calmed me in a way that gave me pause for the challenges of academics, social life, and thoughts about the future. At the time, our high school library was new and completely beautiful. I loved checking out books and having them near me I felt a sense of comfort. I’m still this way. Surrounded by books, ones I’ve already read, ones I want to read, and ones I’m currently reading. Yes, it’s sometimes messy and I really love it. Reading has been a part of my world for as long as I can remember and I’m excited for this next Chapter for The Wildflower Initiative as we launch our first Pilot Program in a High School Wellness Center.

There is no greater agony than an untold story inside of you.

The students receiving this Wellness Space have been out from physically being at school for over a year. Many live multi-generationally and have not had a space of their own. Anxiety, depression, loss of sleep, and other harsh realities of the Covid-19 Pandemic have played out in their lives. Our response has been create an inspiring space to find comfort, calm, and reprieve. The cafe-vibe and modern furnishings along with journals and books not easily found in the library, bring a fresh take on the 21st Century high school experience. Our surveys for data collection come with a QR code so they can complete it on their smartphones and in return are offered a free book. Students can connect with social workers, browse and read books, complete homework, and converse with various community partners. The vision is the development of a health center next door with access to immediate services often not found on a high-school campus.

The partnership came to be from a district social worker, Kim Bodie that viewed a presentation about our libraries and reading spaces and relentlessly pursued us. She had the passion, grit, tenacity, and perseverance to see it through and we are extremely grateful to be a part of this enduring collaborative partnership.

The Wellness Center is one of three we are developing in the North County region of San Diego County. We would love to expand this program to other high schools and middle schools. If you or someone you know is interested in donating, we would love to hear from you!

All my best,
